There are many types of Swing in the world and they depend on the music, culture, style and tempo of the music as to which one you want to learn. There are two main types of Swing that most people in the Pacific Northwest area are familiar with. These are East Coast Swing and West Coast Swing which both evolved from Lindy Hop which is still very popular today with young and old.

Jitterbug

is mostly a 6-count dance. It rotates in a small stationary space on the dance floor. It can rotate either Clockwise or Counter Clockwise. It shares its history with East Coast Swing and Retro Swing.

West Coast Swing Dance Lessons

West Coast Swing

West Coast Swing is a more sophisticated style of swing. Its other names have been Smooth Lindy and Sophisticated Swing. It’s now commonly referred to as West Coast Swing. West Coast Swing is danced in a slotted area on the dance floor with tight, smooth movements and to slower swing music. Because of its slightly more sophisticated footwork we recommend that students take some East Coast Swing or Jitterbug lessons first to familiarize themselves with Swing dancing before taking West Coast Swing. This will help build confidence for a new dancer.

Lindy Hop dance Classes

Lindy Hop

Savoy-style Lindy Hop (also known as the Grandaddy of Swing) brings back the lively, entertaining, and energetic Swing of the ‘30s and ‘40s. It mixes 6-count with 8-count moves and tandem Charleston steps.

Country Swing Dancing Classes

Country Swing

is a simple style of swing consisting of rocking forward and back and very versatile. Because of the steady four counts of this style of swing it is very popular with all types of current music. One very popular genre of music is Country music. This dance is also known as Country Swing because of that. Many Country Swing dancers don’t actually do the footwork because they love the arm-work involved with swinging, wrapping, throwing, tossing, lifting and dropping their partners. Oh did I forget to mention “turning” their partners. At the Rockin’ Horse Dance Barn we teach steady footwork and many turns and none of them involve the woman flying off in the air. However, we could do private lessons for that if it sounds like fun…

 Retro Swing Dance Classes

 Retro Swing

This Double-Step Swing dance also known as Retro Swing is perfect for the ’50s & ’60s music and more. It is very lively with its different style movements. You will find yourself really getting into the music and having fun.
